Childrens Teeth
- Make sure your children brush their teeth and gums with a pea-sized amount of children’s fluoride Toothpaste at least twice a day, especially after eating breakfast and before bedtime. More thank likely they may require adult assistance and should always have adult supervision
- Teach them to floss every day from an early age. Flossing can make a big difference in preventing cavity formation between the teeth — so it's a good idea for parents to start flossing their children's teeth as soon as the teeth are in contact with one another, as early as age 2 1/2.
- Limit the number of times you give them eat sugary snacks each day.
- Make sure they visit their dentist regularly. Your child should see a dentist when they get their first tooth and not later than 1 year of age. This will familiarize the child with the dental environment and any problems will be detected early.
- Make sure you child ALWAYS wears a mouthguard when playing contact sports, rugby, hurling, martial arts, Gaelic football. Your dentist can make your child a customized fitted mouthguard designed to fit your child’s mouth only. This will give the best protection.
- Fissure seal the permanent teeth as they erupt (starting at age 6). Plaque can build up in the fissures of the back teeth safe from your toothbrush and dental floss. Fissure sealant forms a smooth, protective barrier, by covering all the little grooves and dips in the surface of the tooth. This will help protect your child’s teeth from decay.
- Your child may benefit from orthodontic treatment. The age of treatment will vary for each individual. At the adult teeth erupt it is sometimes reveals cross bites, overcrowding and dental protrusions. If you are concerned about this you should contact your dentist.
